Apache Tear
Chemical Compound: Volcanic Glass
Astrology Sign: Aries
Element: Fire
Numerology: 4 Trustworthy Practical
:Scientific Apache Tear:
Apache Tear, a volcanic black glass known as Obsidian, occurs in nodular rounded forms about .2 to 2 inches. (0.5 to 5 cm). It is often found embedded in a
grayish-white flaky matrix known as Perlite, which occurs when Obsidian flows become fractured and hydrated over eons of time, the original glass being altered.
Apache Tear will look opaque until held up to light, which then reveals its translucency. Having a glassy luster, the Apache Tear is a distinctive stone as Obsidian is
formed when lava from volcanic eruptions cools within the earth. The speed at which the lava cools prevents crystallization and thus the rock forms as solid
volcanic glass.
Although black is the most common color for Apache Tears, they too can range in color from smoky black, red to dark brown.
The Apache Tear derived it's name from this legend: One horrific day, a party of the Apache were ambushed by an enemy tribe. The Apaches, fighting bravely,
were markedly outnumbered and driven to the top of a high bluff. Their arrows depleted rendering them unable to fight, and, unwilling to be taken captive, the
Apache leapt from the rock face to their death. Understandably grief-stricken, the Apache women wept over the bodies. It is then stated "their teardrops froze when
they hit the ground to become the lovely stones we know today as Apache Tears."
:Apache Tear Sources:
South America; Japan; Mexico and Afghanistan. Three excellent places to collect Apache Tears are in the USA at Picket Post Mountain, Arizona, Ruby Mountain,
Colorado and Cochetopa Dome, Colorado, which can garner silver inclusions in the Apache Tear that when held up to the light show distinct banded light patterns.
Collectors call these silver lines, "mossy inclusions."
:Metaphysical Uses Of Apache Tear:

Sodalite
Chemical Composition: Na4Al3(SiO4)3Cl, Sodium Aluminum Silicate Chloride
Astrology Sign: Sagittarius
Element: Fire
Numerology: 4 - Strong. Dependable
:Scientific Sodalite:
Sodalite, named in reference to its sodium content, is Sodium Aluminum Silicate Chloride. Sodalite sits in the feldspathoid group, a group of minerals whose
chemistries are close to that of the alkali feldspars, but poor or lacking in their silica content. As a result, they are found in silica poor rocks containing other silica
poor minerals with no quartz. If quartz were present when the melt was crystallizing, it would react with any feldspathoids and form a feldspar.
Sodalite can be found in Dodecahedral crystals, and forms in navy blue color with white calcite streaking. Note should be taken that Sodalite is very similar in
looks to Lapis. The distinguishing marks are, that Sodalite, having more silicate content in it than Lapis, it will appear shinier in the rough than Lapis which looks
chalky, or dull. Also, to the touch, Sodalite will feel smooth, like it had been polished. Lapis, will feel rough and dry. Too, Lapis, not being in the feldspar group, will
not reflect light when moved around in direct sunlight or under a light, as Sodalite will. And lastly, Sodalite forms in a consistent navy blue color, where as Lapis
can range from a navy blue color to a faded denim blue color.
(aka: Princess Blue)
:Sodalite Sources:
Brazil; Bolivia; Greenland; Romania; Portugal; Rhodesia; Burma; USSR; India; Namibia; Litchfield, Maine and Magnet Cove, Arkansas, U.S.A. The largest
commercial source of Sodalite comes from Bancroft, Canada. The rarest, yet most magnificent form of Sodalite, a twelve sided crystal, is found in the lava beds of
Mt. Vesuvius in Italy.
:Sodalite History:
Sodalite does not have a long history - there are no records showing this stone was recognized by any ancient peoples. But when Princess Margaret was visiting
Bancroft, Canada the largest commercial deposit was found, lending it being sometimes referred to as Princess Blue.
