A birthstone is a gift of a precious gemstone that symbolizes the month of birth (in the Gregorian Calendar - calendar months) of the birthday person.
Birthstones have also been called birthday stone, but (as the list below shows) these are actual stones for the DAY of your birth, where Birthstones are in
relation the month of birth.
There have been many different sets of birthstones used throughout history and in different cultures, but in 1912 the American National Association of Jewelers,
Jewelers of America, officially adopted the following list; it is currently the most widely used list in the United States and many other places, including Australia and
Thailand:

Many people have asked me what other stones could be used for a suitable substitute birthstone. So I have created the list below.
If your finances are those where you can't afford a true birthstone, try an alternative stone. They will be less expensive, but still rich in color, and rich in the
energies of your birth month.
The month of January
Instead of Garnet, choose Red Spinel, Red Jasper or Sard. Each are a deep red in color, as is the Garnet.
The month of February
Instead of Amethyst, chose Violet Spinel, Violet Tanzanite or Scapolite. Each has the rich purple color, as in the Amethyst. Too, Amethyst Quartz, or Chevron
Amethyst is a very nice substitute.
The month of March
Instead of Aquamarine, choose Indicolite, Euclase or Blue Topaz. Each has the pretty sea-green color, as that of the Aquamarine. Too, a pale blue Calcite or dyed
Quartz is suitable.
The month of April
Instead of Diamond, choose White Spinel, White Zircon or Colorless Topaz. Each clear in color and when faceted, sparkles such as the Diamond does. As a very
suitable substitute, Quartz will always stand as number one.
The month of May
Instead of Emerald, choose Dark Green Spinel, Cloromelanite or Jade. Each has the beautiful green, as does the Emerald.
Too, Dark Green Jaspers make nice substitutes.
The month of June
Instead of Pearl, choose Davite, Onyx or Chalcedony. Each are a silky white, mirroring the Pearl's luster.
The month of July
Instead of Ruby, choose Red or Pink Spinel, Rhodonite, Stichtite. Each has the soft red-pink color of the elegant Ruby.
The month of August
Instead of Peridot, choose Demantoid, Hydrogrossular or Hiddenite. Each has the muted green tones, as does the Peridot stone. Too, Light Green Jaspers and
Jadeite are a fine substitutes for Peridot.
The month of September
Instead of Sapphire, choose Dark Blue Zircon, Blue Tanzanite or Sodalite. Each a dark, deep royal color of the Sapphire.
The month of October
Instead of Opal, choose the Kunzite, Star Rose Quartz or Thulite. Each bringing out the colors and/or lights of the Opal stone.
The month of November
Instead of Topaz, choose the Golden Spinel, Yellow Zircon or Citrine. Each mirroring the warm golden color of Topaz.
.
The month of December
Instead of Turquoise, choose the Blue Zircon, Hemimorphite or Chrysocolla. Each having the peaceful green-blue color matching the Turquoise.
:Scientific Pietersite:
While he was prospecting some farmland in Namibia, Africa Sid Pieters discovered in Pietersite 1962. He then recorded the find in the mineral records of Britain.
Pietersite's discovery was published in 1964, with the material being named after the discoverer. Currently there are only two known sources of Pietersite; Africa
and China. These two specimens of Pietersite are similar yet different from each other. The Chinese mineral is fibrous and magnesium-rich alkalic amphibole. The
African variety is crocidolite.
The China Pietersite is said to have been discovered in 1993, but did not make it onto the market until 1997. This specimen exhibits colors of reds, blues and golds,
which are slightly different color variations from Mr. Pieter's original mineral, those being blues, browns, greens and yellows. But both are beautiful and are now
universally recognized as Pietersite.
The material found in China was formed from a mineral very similar to crocidolite, named torendrikite. But, regardless of the source, Pietersite will always have
brecciated, fibrous bands of blue, gold and/or red tiger eye type fibers in quartz, but found more in swirls, swathes and fibrous segments rather than the bands and
streaks. This fibrous structure has been folded, stressed, even fractured and/or broken apart via the earth's geologic processes. The fibrous materials have then
been reformed and naturally re-cemented together by quartz. The stone and crystal specimens that go through this process are referred to as brecciated, creating a
finished product with multiple colors, hues and superb chatoyancy.
Pietersite's colors include various blues, golds and reds, that may appear together or alone. Blue is the rarest color, ranging from a baby blue to dark midnight hue.
Red is most rare. Golds can be light to very deep and rich, sometimes having a reddish hue.
All fibrous color variations have a striking chatoyancy, the bright and subtle changing shimmer of color that moves along the surface of a gemstone as it is viewed
from varying angles.

Have you ever dreamt of a jewel, stone, rock or a piece of jewelry? Here are some interesting interpretations for those dreams.
To dream of jewelry is to hold dear to your heart a gift that someone has given you. This could be a gift of friendship, a gift of a smile when you were feeling low.
It could mean something materialistic such as a lover's ring, or a bouquet of flowers. On a bigger level, perhaps tuition to a college you couldn't afford. These gifts
come in many different ways and come in many different types. You will be the best judge of this dream.
To dream of jewels is very similar in interpretation to that of jewelry dreams. Jewels mean you are keeping in your heart and mind, things that you treasure. This
could mean emotions, such as, you treasure your ability to sooth and calm those in their time of stress. Or, you treasure your ability to love other's no matter what
character they possess. Or perhaps you treasure your integrity, your honesty, etc.
Your treasure might consist of a materialistic item you worked and saved for a long time to own. Perhaps it is a many generation heirloom, or the brand new car or
home you've been wanting to purchase.
Treasures come in many different types, styles, shapes, forms and sizes. Something you hold dear, and might dream about, is your special treasure, or as stated
above, a gift.
Color of stones have their own meaning. If you dreamt of a purple Amethyst, its meaning is: healing. Perhaps you are in need of spiritual, emotional, mental or
physical healing. The Amethyst dream will alert you to this fact.
To dream of the colorless Diamond could possibly mean you are becoming greedy in your possessions. You can't see the color of openheartedness and
open-mindedness. Or, perhaps you dreamt of the diamond's hardness. This means your character is in need of some softening. You've become too hard in your
nature.
If you have dreamt of the beautiful green Emerald, you are being made aware of your potential and growth. This stone is giving you the encouragement for
successful endeavors.
Opal dreams are telling you to become aware of your intuitive powers. Opal's lights are showing you the enlightenment you will gain when seeking your intuitive
gifts inside you.
Dreaming of Pearls is a nice way of telling yourself that no matter what happens, you will always come out on top. Pearl dreams are like getting a welcomed pat on
the back.
If you have dreams of Rubies, then you have been, or are in need of, extending yourself to others. Perhaps you are giving too much of yourself and dreaming of
Ruby is a warning sign to think of yourself now. Or, it could mean that you should prepare yourself to be in service of others. Examples are: your comfort and kind
words at a funeral, or your smile and gentle touch after one's surgery. An unexpected baby gift you crocheted, or reading books to children at the library. You'll be
the best judge of Ruby's meaning if you chance to dream of it.
To dream of Sapphire is very special. This jewel is telling you that it is time for pursuit of a religious pathway. Too, you need to expand on your thought
boundaries. It is time for you to open your mind and let faith and spiritualism in.
If you have dreamt of a rock cluster, this means it is time for a reality check in your waking life. Perhaps you have been living in a dream world for too long, or
your imagination is running away, or you are having paranoid thoughts. No matter, you need to find a grounding point in your waking life, if rocks have come into
your dreams.
Have you dreamt of a sculptured rock? This interpretation means you've experienced a rich, well rounded life. You are confident and have healthy self-esteem.
If you have dreamt of many tiny rocks or stones or pebbles, then you are in need of the self-esteem mentioned above. You see yourself as an insignificant person -
just another grain of sand on the beach. Tonight, as you fall asleep, tell yourself you will dream of a sculptured rock.
Dreaming of the weight or hardness of a stone is alerting you to the fact that you have hardened your character. In some instances this is for the good. Perhaps you
needed a little weight in your life so people no longer take you for granted. In a lot of instances though, it is alerting you to the fact that you have hardened your
character and are in need of changing your nature for the better, quickly. You will be the best judge of interpretation for this type of dream.
A surveyor with the Egyptian Geological Survey, was probing the deep Sahara desert for the legendary oasis of Zerzura. An anonymous 15th century Arabic
treasure seekers guide, "The Book of Hidden Pearls" describes Zerzura as a whitewashed city of the desert on whose gate is carved a bird. Those seeking the
treasure are advised to "take with your hand the key in the beak of the bird, then open the door of the city. Enter, and there you will find great riches..."
Zerzura was never found. But in December 1932, the surveyor, Patrick Clayton, found pieces of incredibly clear, yellow-green tinged glass in amongst the black,
charred rocks of the desert floor.
LDG is an amorphous glass of silicon dioxide, more commonly found in its crystalline form as quartz. Small pieces of silica glass are often found associated with
lava flows which cool suddenly as they pour into the sea. The silicon in the lava freezes, forming an amorphous mass that resembles broken glass. Desert glass is
98% pure silica, the purest natural glass in the world.
There is much speculation of where LDG comes from. One possible clue to the origin is in the rare, smokey black pieces. These dark samples are rich in iridium,
which is typical of extra-terrestrial bodies such as meteorites or comets. Small pieces of shocked quartz have been found embedded in some samples of LDG,
indicating a meteor impact origin. Silica glass has been found at other known meteor impact sites, but the glass there is blackened and fragmented, and is embedded
in a matrix of fused and broken rock. LDG seems too clear and pure to have been created this way, however.
The problem with this explanation is that there are no known impact sites in the immediate area in which the LDG could have been created.
The area in which LDG is found is rich in artifacts left by man over the whole of pre-history. Stone knives, spear points, scrapers and arrow heads also litter the
landscape. In 1998, it was discovered that a green scarab found amongst Tutankhamen's tomb goods was carved from LDG and not chalcedony as originally
thought. This is the only known piece of Egyptian jewelry made from LDG. It is fascinating to wonder how this piece came out of the deep desert to end up in
Tutankhamen's possession. Until just recently, LDG was difficult to find unless you are prepared to go out into the desert and find it for yourself.
