Spirits and the 11 Dimensions
01/31/14
The human brain (as we know it) can interpret sensorium from the standard three physical dimensions and translate what it senses; with the aid of our oh so fallible memory we can add in the fourth dimension of movement through space, or through time. Scientists have aided our weak (or specialized) senses with machines whose capabilities far exceed our physical ones. But the mind is still a powerful tool.

There are scientific theories about the universe that give possibility for proving that spirits exist, and where. The majority of theoretical physicists accept a view of the universe called String Theory or M-Theory. Both theories suggest that we exist (not in a 3 or 4 dimensional universe), but a universe composed of 10 or 11 dimensions. Though parts of these theories have been proven (mathematically), there remains much controversy on why and how these "extra" dimensions are involved in the three that we know.

With the discovery of many extra dimensions in our physical space, we may have come one step closer to understanding where and how spirits co-exist with us on the physical plane.
One possibility that these new/old dimensions bring is to help the laymen (eventually) understand how objects and energies interact within our 3-dimensional framework but are not "stuck" in those three dimensions.

Most people know that with the exception of light sources themselves, the objects that we see (visually) are visible to us only because of that objects' reflection of light. A beam of light (from some source) is travelling in a straight line in 3-dimensional space, hits an object, bounces off at an angle, is detected by our eye, and is translated (in a complex dance by our brain) as the presence of an object. Fairly simple stuff.

Let me give you an interesting 3-dimensional example involving visible light. Have you ever seen a flash of colored light, on the ground, or on some clothing, and you had to look carefully around until you saw it again. But it kept appearing and disappearing. But finally you locked on to the flash, which is now a steady colored light…you move in closer, and you find a tiny piece of glitter, or a drop of dew! Because the object was oriented in a very specific way, the light reflecting off of it wasn't visible unless you were viewing it at a very specific angle. Again, seems to be fairly simple stuff.

Keep in mind that we aren't discussing some fantastic sci-fi alternate dimensions, or supernatural Other-Realms. String Theory and M-Theory are working to explain other Physical (or energy if you prefer) dimensions interacting and intersecting with the 3-D universe that we know.

So if you have ever had trouble locating a 'simple' beam of reflected light, how much more difficult would it be for someone to locate the source of an object or energy that wasn't part of our "solid" 3-D universe, but was just passing through this dimensional layer to another?
Here is perhaps where the paranormal makes its entrance to the multi-dimensional universe. Allowing extra dimensions into the equations, ghosts could exist in one or more of these extra dimensions in physical space. As the spirits moved through our layer (the 3-D "solid" one), they wouldn't exactly behave like 'normal' objects. For an apt but limited analogy as an easy way to think about movement: when we drive a car, we are only moving along the roads; an airplane or helicopter can move in the same ways, but also up and down, and at angles.

Ghosts may not only be moving in the 3-D world, but through it, and out of it as well. But how could we tell? Science doesn't believe that the sense organs in our bodies are designed to detect anything but very specific wavelengths of electromagnetic energy (such as visible light) or certain frequencies of sound. Even our language is deficient when describing many normal things that are part of the 3-D universe; try to explain to a friend the concept of "inside" without using the words 'inside' or 'in' or 'out'. And 'inside' is considered a normal concept in the 3-D world.
A portable hole-an amusing but apt visual representation of how objects inteact differently in a universe that has more the just 3 dimensions
Basically all objects of the 3-D universe reflect light, or absorb it in way that still draws our visual attention. Beings moving through the 3-D may not reflect at all, or only at certain times. As another poor example of the difficulty facing paranormal researchers, look at heat. Heat is one of the least solid things in the world, just a minor change in energy contained in an object, but even it can temporarily affect or alter the physical universe in a way that we can see…as the heat mirage.

It is was/is theorized that a spirit is not a fully three dimensional being in our universe. It is thought that perhaps they are rather like a piece of paper; when held facing you, the writing etc. can be seen, but if viewed edge-on, then there is very little to see at all! As an experimental attempt to capture a 'two dimensional' spirit on film at a haunted location, a researcher set up multiple cameras, over a dozen linked together in a ring shape, and all pointed in toward the same spot. The rationale was that no matter at what angle, as the spirit passed in front of the cameras one of them was bound to be able to see the spirit, face-on, so to speak. Unfortunately this amazing setup didn't prove to be any more useful at taking pictures of spirits than any other tried method. If a ghost is not passing through our dimension where a beam of light can reflect to our eye, or a camera, then we simply won't see it. It isn't a matter of camera sensitivity, or of shutter speed; if the object isn't reflecting light, then there literally isn't anything to 'see'.

There is some hope though. Despite what science shows, if we can physically perceive energies that aren't generated in the 3-D layer, then those perceptions might be a bit odd, sporadic, or something else entirely. Many people, especially psychics, can 'pick up' on energies that are not just light, or sound, or heat.

Also, it is speculated that, like the roads that cars travel on, there are only so many ways and 'places' that these multiple dimensions overlap or intersect with our 3-D level…some might call them high activity hauntings. Perhaps if the previously mentioned camera setup was taken to one of those places, better results might occur. Similarly, like with the reflected light from a piece of glitter, a person sensitive to the 'energies' in their environment might be able to detect a spirits' movement, and track it back to its source…which isn't likely to be 'far' away at all, though not physically traceable by us.

Given time, science might even be able to prove what many people have been saying and knowing for centuries; that the spirits ARE here with us, but that they are not HERE with us.
