In 1899, the first license for a female doctor in the state of Nevada was granted to Dr. Eliza Cook.

She entered Cooper Medical College in San Francisco (Stanford University Medical School) in the spring of 1882 beginning the Doctor’s Program studies at a time when very few women entered into the medical field. To continue her education, in 1888 Eliza attended the Women Medical College in Philadelphia. The following summer she took a post-graduate course at the New York City medical college.

She was also recognized as the first Doctor to have made a lifelong commitment to the community she served. For over forty years, Eliza tended to the sick, the infirm, and helped deliver many babies (her medical specialty) to the Carson Valley popu
lace.
