A Ghost Hunter's Guide for Investigating the Paranormal

Spooky, scary, cool.  Ghosts and spirits are inextricably twined into our modern world.  Despite
regular denials and hopeful wishing (or perhaps because of them), tradition, culture, religion and
science all search for the world of the afterlife and its citizens.

Historical and modern, the paranormally inclined have always had a tendency to present
information about the paranormal couched in their own words and terms.  This naturally causes
confusion and argument.

There isn't any kind of consensus worldwide on what a ghost is (or isn’t) but people keep trying.
If you consult a dictionary, you will find virtually no difference in the definitions of "ghost" and
"spirit". The word spirit will be used more often in English language, as it seems more
sophisticated and modern.

Often a ghost is a formerly alive, earthbound entity.  A spirit is a being from 'the Other Side', who
may or may not have been formerly alive.  Try this: Ghost of the Living; Spirit Guide from the
Other Side.  This doesn't always hold up, so the terms ghost and spirit are used somewhat
interchangeably.

Generally a ghost is considered to be a non-corporeal manifestation of a dead individual, and is
often thought to be the spirit or soul of a person who has remained on Earth after their physical
death.

According to some, a ghost is only the personality of someone who has died, and isn't directly a
soul or spirit.  Every culture in the world has stories about ghosts, but with wild disagreements
both as to what ghosts are, and whether they are a part of nature or hallucinations of some kind.

Ghosts have been reported to be seen at all times of the day or night and any time of year, have
been reported in many different places, but particularly where people live and work.

Outside of movies, ghosts are often human sized and shaped (although some accounts also
mention animal ghosts), but typically described as "silvery", "shadowy", "semitransparent", or
"fog-like." Ghosts tend not to have physical (corporeal) bodies, but maintain a subtle astral or
incorporeal 'self'.

Ghosts usually don’t manifest themselves visually, but do show up in other manners; such as the
small movements of an object, spontaneous throwing of a light switch, noises, etc., which
currently have no scientific explanation.
